- Building Materials - Building Materials are usually the first cost that you will encounter. These include the cost of walls, roofing and any other options. Be aware that this is only one portion of the entire project, but it does have the least amount of variation. Metal
buildings have many advantages. They are non-combustible and wood-destroying bugs cannot burrow in or eat them. Metal construction is more versatile in design and more efficient during installation. A metal-framed building will insure a longer life and less maintenance.
- Engineering - Many pre-manufactured building companies have a standard set of plans that are similar to your
building available at a reasonable rate. This may notbe your final cost on the engineering. Most counties require a specific drawing of your building along with a foundation plan for your site.
- Grading/Pad/Foundation -
Keeping your building on the ground is very important. Finding your barn upside down after a storm usually creates some stress. Different construction requires different concrete depths and widths. For example, pole buildings require larger piers because the "pier" (Hole in ground filled with
concrete) must provide sheer strength and wind resistance. A building with interior walls has "sheer strength" (Ability of a building to resist a exterior
force applied to a wall) built in, so piers do not need to be so massive. The cost of concrete for pole buildings can be more than 6 times that of a building
with pre fabricated wall sections.
- Permits - The cost for permits fluctuates from county to county. If your county has a provision for Ag exempt buildings, this may be the easiest path.
Ag exempt buildings usually require fewer, if any inspections. Be prepared to spend some quality time with your county planning department.
- Labor - Approximate installation costs range between $ 2.25 to $ 6.00 a Sq. Ft.. and up. Depending on how a prefabricated package is manufactured for assembly will directly affect how long that building will take to install. Note
that some buildings can be installed by you. This will help to reduce the cost of the overall project.
